about the metal

Kevia uses several types of metals in her work, a short description of each follows:

22K GOLD VERMEIL

Produced by electroplating 22k gold on sterling silver. By nature, 22k gold is very soft so please treat your 22k gold vermeil pieces with the utmost are. Because the base is sterling silver, 22k gold vermeil will tarnish. Tarnish often makes metal appear black, red, and or green in color.

STERLING SILVER

Sterling silver is the standard of quality for jewelry containing 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Copper is added to silver to make it more durable, it lso causes the metal to tarnish which will make parts of the metal appear green, black, or red.

18K ROSE GOLD VERMEIL

Produced by electroplating 18k rose gold on sterling silver. Extra cooper is added to the yellow gold to create a pink color gold. Because the base is sterling silver and the gold also has copper alloy, 18k rose gold vermeil may tarnish more often that 22K gold vermeil. Tarnish often makes metal appear black, red, and or green in color.

14K GOLD FILLED

Is made by fusing a layer of solid 14k karat gold to a supporting metal alloy (usually a base metal like brass). The bond produced is a permanent one and will not rub off with wear. The karat gold content must be 1/20th of the total metal weight. We use 14k gold filled chains and findings to create beautiful, yet durable and affordable jewelry.
